SUS 398 Global Sustainability and Environment

Students will be studying the unique ecology of the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. With it’s marine habitat,towering mountain ranges and northwest temperate rainforests, it offers a unique environment and contrasts. Ecotourism has taken a sustainable path and instead of construction of large hotels, locals have invested in building a wide range of tiny houses for rent. Students will be staying in a total of 26 different tiny houses, including a tiny houses on wheels, a treehouse, a converted school bus and a shipping container. They will interview builders, developers and property owners about the trend and analyze the buildings for practicality and sustainability.

 

Denmark

SOC 459 Comparative Policy Analysis

In this course students will engage in the process of comparative social, political and cultural analysis by comparing and contrasting Danish society with that of the United States. We will conduct empirical social science inquiries into social and environmental policies that shape life in both countries, and will examine how and why each society chooses to structure themselves accordingly. We pay particular attention to how state policies differentially impact the lived realities of both citizens and their environments.

 

 

Iceland

Planned for May/June 2024

hrough the use of multimedia, experiences, readings, research and fieldwork in Iceland, students will obtain a global perspective on the impacts of environmental change. They will examine the impact of centuries long soil degradation and deforestation, learn about the development of geothermal energy and study the long term the social impact of environmental change. 冰球突破mg平台 students will develop a more personal connection to environmental issues in other nations and broaden their understanding of the interaction of humans and their environment.
